It’s over twenty years since the very first
Matalan store opened. Back in 1985 there was
nothing quite like it! Top name clothing at
up to half the high street prices. The
concept was the brainchild of the founder -
John Hargreaves, who successfully brought
the original US idea of out-of-town value to
retail parks the length and breadth of the
UK.
The first store was Preston. It was an
unequivocal success and more followed,
bringing our store count to 50 by our tenth
birthday. The public loved our commitment to
lowering prices, producing a spacious
shopping environment and of course,
outstanding service. To keep pace with our
incredible store growth, our head office
relocated from Preston to impressive,
purpose-built premises in Skelmersdale. This
also included a state of the art
distribution centre - a hub for the
recognisable Matalan HGV fleet.
May 1998 saw another milestone as Matalan
became a PLC and was floated on the London
Stock Exchange. Though we now sit among many
of the UK’s leading companies, our
commitment to the basics remains true. More
value, choice, style and quality - a tribute
to our name and most importantly - our team.
Today Matalan trades from over 195 stores
and total of 6.5 million square feet. We’re
often copied, but never beaten. Take a look

unbeaten in sales of mens' shirt and tie
sets and we sell over 8700 bibs each week in
infantswear alone. Did we also mention we
sell over 3.6 million candles per year, and

In little over 20 years we’ve taken
retailing by storm. It’s a short history and
an unprecedented one, wholly attributable to
