Details about the
Area
Birmingham is a city and metropolitan borough in the West Midlands. It is the largest of our core cities and is
considered as the UK's second city. It has a population of over 1 million people and despite it growing in size
later than many other uk cities, today it boasts a range of different manufacturing businesses, retailing, major
wholesaling operations and is establishing itself as a major business and conference centre of Europe.
Originally Birmingham was a small market town right up until the time of the Industrial Revolution. It was probably
down to the magnificent work of Matthew Boulton and James Watt, who invented the steam engine, the work of
William Murdock who was the inventor of gas lighting and Joseph Priestley who discovered oxygen that put
the city
firmly on the map.
A massive infrastructure of canals were originally established during the industrial revolution period to cope with
the influx of traffic and to this day the city still has a more extensive network of
canals than Venice; yet this
often goes unnoticed due to the extensive amount of shops, bars and clubs that dominate the landscape of the city
often hiding the full view of the canals behind them.
The City has several neighbouring towns and cities, such as Solihull,
Coventry
and the town of
Wolverhampton
amongst other
towns of the Black Country.
People from the area are known as 'Brummies', a term derived from the city's nickname of Brum. This originates from
the cities relationship with the motor car. The first four wheeled petrol driven car was built by F W Lancaster in
1895 in Birmigham and a number of motor manufactures were established within the area at one time making
Birmingham
a major motor manufacturing hub within the UK.
