Working Duties Expected

Personal business advisers provide independent advice to small and medium-sized businesses. Advisers seek a range of local businesses to work with Business Link in England, Business Connect in Wales or within Business Enterprise Scotlands network of enterprise trusts, to help them develop their businesses.

Personal business advisers analyse their customers'' businesses to gain a full understanding of how they are performing and their future potential. They identify which support and specialist services the businesses require and recommend appropriate suppliers. Advisers may brief the service providers selected by their customers. Personal business advisers work closely with Business Links, Business Connects or Business Enterprise Scotlands information services and other specialist advisers.

Hours and Environment

A personal business adviser normally works daytime office hours, although some evening or weekend work may be required.

The majority of work is indoors in the business advisers office, or at the premises of customers and service providers. Some travel is required.

Skills and Interests

A personal business adviser should have:

  • substantial experience of managing and marketing small or medium-sized businesses
  • excellent written and spoken communication skills
  • awareness of current business and financial procedures and trends
  • knowledge of local national and European business support services/providers
  • the ability to analyse businesses and highlight priorities
  • an objective, non-judgemental and positive approach
  • the capability to managing a number of projects at one time and the ability to work with minimum supervision.

Entry

There are no nationally agreed entry requirements for this profession, but this is likely to change in the future.

The main requirement for working as a personal business adviser is substantial business experience, usually gained through running your own business, or in management, consultancy, human resources, marketing, finance and operations. Most personal business advisers have a degree or other relevant professional qualification.

A number of universities run courses that are particularly aimed at providing training for personal business advisers.

Training

There is likely to be initial on-the-job training and then continuing professional development, which includes attending training courses, personal research and project work.

The Institute of Business Advisers offers professional qualifications and has developed an accreditation framework of entrance requirements and continuing professional development. It also accredits a wide range of training courses for both existing and prospective business advisers.

A range of NVQs/SVQs are available at levels 3 to 5 which cover general business skills. More specifically, there is NVQ/SVQ Business Support Level 4. There are no formal educational qualifications for NVQs/SVQs, as they are gained through competence-based training.

Opportunities

Personal business advisers are either employed or self-employed under contract with the local Business Link in England, Business Connect in Wales or within the Business Enterprise system in Scotland.

There are opportunities for promotion to team manager or to become a specialist consultant.

Annual Income

Figures are intended as a guideline only.

Personal business advisors earn between £18,000 and £25,000.
