Working Duties Expected

A motor vehicle parts person uses specialist knowledge to sell motor parts and accessories to vehicle mechanics and the public.

When taking orders for vehicle parts, it is necessary to take details of make, year, model and chassis number of the vehicle. Once the correct part has been located on computer or in a catalogue, it is ordered from a manufacturer or other supplier, if it is not in stock.

A major part of the work involves stock control. This is usually done with the help of computer software, which automatically re-orders stock as it is sold. However there may also be a need for keeping some manual records.

Complete stock audits are carried out regularly to ensure that the physical stock agrees with the stock record.

Hours and Environment:

Working hours are usually 8.30am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. In some firms staff cover evening (up to about 8pm) and weekend work.

There may be some bending, lifting and carrying of boxed goods required when taking delivery of stock.

Skills and Interests:

To be a motor vehicle parts person you need to have:

  • the ability to maintain wide product knowledge of vehicle parts and accessories
  • the ability to find and use information from a range of sources
  • a good memory for serial numbers, parts and makes of vehicle
  • strong communication skills for telephone sales
  • computer skills
  • the ability to explain technical details to mechanics and to the public
  • an ability to perfom administrative tasks.

Entry:

There are no minimum entry requirements, although this is dependent on the employer. Some employers may ask for four GCSEs/S grades (A-C/1-3) including maths and English or equivalent qualifications such as an Intermediate GNVQ/GSVQ Level 2 in Engineering.

For details of qualification equivalents see:

Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (England, Wales and Northern Ireland)
Scottish Qualifications Authority
Applicants to ReMIT (the training arm of the Retail Motor Industry Federation) and other training providers normally take an aptitude test. The results are taken into account when deciding on their level of entry.

Training:

New entrants normally work towards NVQs/SVQs in Vehicle Parts Distribution and Supply, Levels 1, 2 and 3. Training is normally in the workplace with day or block release at college. There are no set entry requirements for NVQs/SVQs.

Experienced motor vehicle parts salespersons may attend short courses, to improve product knowledge, run by main dealers or manufacturers.

Foundation and Advanced Modern Apprenticeships (MAPPs) may be available for people aged 16-24.
For details see: MAPPs (England); Skillseekers MAPPs (Scotland); National Traineeships MAPPs (Wales); and MAPPs (Northern Ireland).

Opportunities:

Employment prospects are good due to the likelihood of there being a shortage of skilled people in the future.

With experience, motor vehicle parts persons may be able to go on to supervisory and management positions.

Annual Income:

The annual income section is intended as a guideline only.

Rates of pay for motor vehicle parts persons are on a scale guided by the National Joint Council (NJC) of the Retail Motor Industry Federation. However, pay rates vary with employer.

Trainee motor vehicle parts persons earn around £6,500.
Experienced motor vehicle parts persons earn around £13,700.
Senior staff earn around £17,000.
