Working Duties Expected

Ushers/usherettes work in cinemas, theatres and concert halls. In cinemas they may be known as cinema attendants, customer service assistants or crew members.

Before a show they check tickets and show people to their seats. They may sell programmes, and might sell refreshments from trays or kiosks during the interval. During the performance they deal with problems or complaints, referring customers to the manager when necessary. Ushers/usherettes may be required to re-stock the refreshment kiosks and trays. They also collect litter and tidy up after the performance.

Some cinemas are now adopting a multiskilling approach to staffing. This may mean that an usher/usherette may also work as a cafe or bar attendant or in the box office.

Hours and Environment:

Theatres and cinemas are usually open for performances in the afternoons and evenings.

Uniforms are provided.

The work can be physically demanding as it involves much standing and walking.

Skills and Interests:

As a cinema or theatre usher/usherette you should:

  • enjoy dealing with people
  • be polite and helpful
  • be a good communicator
  • be able to keep calm in an emergency
  • be able to handle money
  • enjoy working as part of a team.

Entry:

Although there are no formal educational entry requirements some experience of dealing with people, for example as a shop assistant, would be useful. There are no age limits and anyone over the age of 16 can find employment as an usher or usherette.

The hours of work, shifts and part-time opportunities can make this work particularly attractive to people with study or family commitments.

Training:

New entrants learn on-the-job with supervision from experienced staff.

You may be able to work towards NVQ/SVQ Level 2 in Cultural Venue Operations and Support or Customer Service.

Foundation and Advanced Modern Apprenticeships (MAPPs) may be available for people aged 16-24.
For details see: MAPPs (England); Skillseekers MAPPs (Scotland); National Traineeships MAPPs (Wales); and MAPPs (Northern Ireland).

Opportunities:

The entertainment industry is buoyant at the moment and cinemas and theatres are very popular.

Cinemas are usually owned and operated by large leisure groups who regulate recruitment, wages, salaries and conditions of service for all their staff. Promotion within the group to ticket sales, cashier, assistant manager, relief manager and eventually manager may be possible.

In theatres, concert halls and smaller cinemas you would normally be part of a small team and could expect to gain considerable all-round experience as a result. This would lead to promotion within the team or possibly at some other venue.

Annual Income:

Figures are intended as a guideline only.

Depending upon age and ability ushers/usherettes may earn between £7,500 and £10,500 a year.

There are no set salary scales and many posts are part time and are paid pro-rata.
