Working Duties Expected

Employment advice workers offer advice and support to clients on many employment issues, including:

• low pay;
• constructive dismissal;
• disciplinary procedures;
• redundancies;
• equal opportunities;
• family friendly employment policies;
• other employment rights issues.

At some centres, advisers also offer a range of help with job hunting, including advertising vacancies, providing career counselling and offering assistance with CV preparation, interview techniques and self-confidence building.
Working in various settings they may work as specialists in a general advice centre, or they may work in dedicated employment advice centres based within the community, or at law centres. Some work for trade unions, low pay units and equal opportunities organisations.

There is some variation based on whether the advice centre focuses on supporting job seekers, dealing with employment rights, or both. However, typical activities will usually include:

• interpreting and explaining legislation and official documents, such as employment contracts;
• identifying possible courses of action, eg the need for legal help or planning a good CV;
• liaising with other organisations, eg solicitors, trade unions and employers;
• referring clients to other sources of help, eg recruitment agencies and solicitors;
• keeping up to date with current employment legislation.
