Working Duties Expected

An agricultural economist offers advice on economic trends with reference to agriculture and other rural economic contexts. Much of the work involves advising farmers on ways of improving their businesses.

What does the role encounter?

An Agricultural Economist’s work includes some of the following tasks:

• monitoring economic changes in agriculture;
• devising methods and procedures for obtaining required data;
• understanding various sampling techniques that may be used to conduct different types of surveys;
• creating as well as using various mathematical modelling techniques to develop forecasts;
• applying models of economic behaviour to agricultural changes and developments;
• advising agricultural organisations on costs and benefits of options;
• advising government, employers or trade unions on the economic implications of agricultural policy options;
• producing various numerical and non numerical written reports;
• supplying information on agricultural market trends to the press.

Typical employers include the Government Economic Service (GES), the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), the Home Grown Cereals Authority, agriculture and food industries and universities.
