Gender equality 'improving for accountants'

28/11/2007

The accountancy profession can offer women in the workplace a more level playing field as more and more firms recognise the importance of staff retention, according to a new survey.

Recent research from Elements suggests that over two thirds of female accountants believe they have equal career opportunities to their male colleagues.

Figures show that 68 per cent of women in accountancy rated their promotional prospects as being the same as those of a man.

However, 70 per cent of senior female employees admitted that family commitments has been an obstacle to career progression, meaning that they have had to work harder to get to their position on the ladder.

In response, almost half advocated a wider introduction of formal career breaks for child birth and flexible working opportunities.

One professional responded: "We're rapidly moving towards a situation where both men and women have an equal desire to create an environment where there is time for both work and family. Female accountancy students make up half of new entrants into the accountancy profession – that has to spell good news for the future."ADNFCR-1196-ID-18373065-ADNFCR
