Sir Alan Sugar tells businesses to get their own apprentices

Entrepreneur Sir Alan Sugar has told UK businesses they will benefit from taking on their own apprentices.

By embracing apprenticeships firms will get motivated young people that will help them to succeed in the current economic climate, he says.

Sir Alan spoke to companies in the north-east in one of a series of regional seminars, which it is hoped will promote the new apprenticeship schemes.

"We want as many employers to come along as possible so they can find out how apprentices are real doers, making things happen and helping businesses grow and thrive," said Sir Alan.

He was joined by parliamentary under secretaries of state Iain Wright and Lord Young of Norwood Green.

Lord Young explained that apprentices can play a pivotal role in the economy "helping to build a company's resilience".

The Trades Union Congress is also supportive of the government's initiative and has said "apprenticeships should be at the heart of the skills-based economy".
