Bookmaker Betting on More Jobs

08/12/2010

Irish bookmaker Paddy Power has overtaken Bank of Ireland as the crisis-hit country's eighth largest company and is creating 1,440 jobs in a major expansion to the UK, Ireland and Australia by 2013 as it opens up to 150 new high street branches.

About 500 will be hired in Dublin, Ireland to man the growing international online business from their head office. 810 of the jobs will be in Britain and the remaining – 130 will be taken on in Australia, where the bookie is one of the biggest players. Over the coming years Paddy Power will be seeking to add substantially to the existing employee base, with a wide array of positions in areas such as e-commerce, technology, quantitative research, online marketing and risk management.

The move comes as Ireland’s economy teeters on the brink. Paddy Power chief executive Patrick Kennedy said: “Hopefully this is a shot in the arm” as the company's growth is good news for the Irish economy.

The opening programme will give Paddy Power 250 UK bookies but this is still far below William Hill and Ladbrokes but Paddy has been taking business of both big names.

Mr Kennedy said: “We are still only small boys in the UK, but things are going really well.”
