Details about the
Area
Sheffield is England's 4th largest city with a shopping, leisure and cultural centre of regional significance.
It has not, unlike cities of a similar size, developed as a fully fledged regional capital. It is a city and
metropolitan borough in South Yorkshire, England. It is so named because of its origins in a field on the River
Sheaf that runs through the city.
The city has grown from largely industrial roots to encompass a wide economic base.
The population of the City is estimated at over 520,000 people and it is one of the eight largest English cities
outside of London.
It became world famous in the 19th century for its production of steel. Many innovations in the industry were
developed locally, including crucible and stainless steel. This fuelled an almost tenfold increase in the population
of the area during the Industrial Revolution. It gained its city charter in 1893 and became officially titled
the “City of Sheffield”.
The city's economy was built on its steel, engineering and cutlery industries which have established a worldwide
reputation for quality products. It remains one of the country's foremost manufacturing areas and a centre for
advanced engineering.
International competition from mainly European countries caused a decline in local industry during the 1970s and
1980s and at the same time the national coal industry collapsed, affecting it's population.
In recent years the city has reinvented itself as a sporting and technology city and
hosts a wide range of
different businesses and Industry unrelated to its original Steel industry background. Over the last thirty years
the city has seen a steady growth of businesses related to the service industry sectors.
